Grief is the normal response to any significant loss in life. Grief suffered by pet owners after their pet dies is the same as that experienced after the death of a person. This can be compounded by a percieved lack of societal permission that they are indulgent to mourn the passing of a being that was e.g.:” just a dog”. The death of a pet means the loss of a non-judgmental love source, of mutual nurturing and, often, as for some, of contact with the outside world.
